Just another note on B12: anyone who is concerned, try a vegan yeast extract (yeast spread. Think vegemite, or marmite.). It has most of the B-vitamins in it.

I don't think we have Vegemite or Marmite in the US. We do have nutritional yeast. It's used in a lot of vegan recipes because it is usually fortified with B12 and it has a faintly cheesy taste. Most people use Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula yeast flakes.

Nutritional Yeast is an excellent source of protein, rich in many of the essential amino acids that complement proteins available from other sources such as corn, wheat, and soy. RED STAR Nutritional Yeast contains an average of 50% protein by weight.
RED STAR Nutritional Yeast is also a rich source of B-complex vitamins that are important for normal and healthy body functions.

Damn, just lost a post.
I've always read that B-12 in fortified foods come from cultivation in environments rich in some B-12 producing bacteria.
Also, KRITER, I was thinking about what you said in regards to a possible economic crash, and I think that it is even more sensible to stuff ourselves with B-12 fortified foods while it is affordable, since we can store it in our livers and use those reserves for years.
What do you think?

Oh, it can be produced on laboratories. I would bet that's the source of the B-12 in fortified products, though, I have to admit, I haven't done such a great research into the subject.
You might be right about your B-12 status, though reserves eventually vanish, so keep that in mind.
Regards!

It's conserved (used and then recycled) in our livers for some years, if you've been consuming animal products. That's how a lot of newer vegans get by without supplementing. However, those stores will diminish as you go longer without consuming animal products.
People don't recognize when they're getting low; they just feel tired and such.
