Subject description: important info from the Organic Consumers Union!

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have found residues from animal antibiotics in common produce, says a new study. Spreading raw manure on fields from animals treated with antibiotics is a common practice on conventional farms. Unfortunately scientists have now discovered that vegetables like corn, cabbage and green onions absorb those antibiotics, which are then ingested by consumers.

"Vegetarians may think the huge overuse of antibiotics in livestock and poultry will not affect them, but that's not true," stated Margaret Mellon, the director of the Union of Concerned Scientists. "Consumers eating vegetables grown on soil fertilized with manure may be unknowingly ingesting antibiotics." Regular consumption of these antibiotics can then cause bacteria in the body to become resistant.

yes its true - also & sadly many veggies have higher levels of pesticides in their system, in a recent UK study.

BUT - high diets of fresh fruit n veg can combat the toxins found everywhere
and elimate the probelms. Also certain herbs can free the body of these pesticides.

being a veg*n because of this problem (among others) is an admirable thing to do, then - you don't contribute to the use of antibiotics but you take all the flak from the stuff in the veggies you eat. But a vegetarian diet is healthier all round anyway.

What about organic veggies and fruit? I figured whatever they used to fertilize them it needed to be organic as well... Maybe I'm wrong on that one.

I'm pretty sure that is the case, yes. The approval systems are quite strict, they involve roll-backs so no stuff is found in the soil from years back, they can't be near conventional farms and there are even talks about removing organic status from air-freighted produce (in my humble opinion, it would be better to give it like 'organic grade 1' and 'organic grade 2', if people are buying even air-freighted organically grown crops, that's better than air-freighted conventionally grown crops!)

Unfortunately, U.S. law allows manure from factory-farmed conventional animals to be used as fertilizer for organic crops. This is illogical, unfair, and a health hazard, but that did not stop the government from allowing it anyway when they created the current organic standards. I don't know about other countries.

This is an old thread, but that had to be said.

How did you learn about the regulations?
