Pet cats Are cat owners accessories to mass murder Pet cats kill many billions of animals every year world wide. Many of them die in horrific circumstances far worse than for instance farmed animals.
If my dog tears a child to bits in the street then I would be responsibl;e for it.
Are cat owners responsible for these millions of deaths?
Or can they just wash their hands of it all and say 'it was the cat, nothing to do with me!'

I can't honestly say to you my cats never kill as it's in their nature to do so, but I would be confident in saying my cats are well fed, they have access to food at all times and don't seem to be to bothered about the birds in the trees and I have never seen any dead animals around the garden. They also don't wonder off, their are some cats round my way that you some times see a few streets away from their home in search of food. It's the amount of cats around that concerns me.I'd like to see far less around, breeding controls and laws. Many AR people keep their cats indoors for the reasons of your concern and for the cats safety, many more AR people what an end to all pet keeping, zero breeding, so your in the right place if you are totally against cats.

What do you suggest we do about it? We are aware that cats kill other animals infact they are they biggest killers of wild rabbits in the UK.

it's the thing thak keeps confusing me. I love cats as I love all kinds of animals.. I can teach my dog that she can't hunt but can do nothing about the cats...
why the world of nature has to be so cruel?

A safe - and happy! - cat is an indoor cat. Oh, I think I'm repeating myself from another thread.
To satisfy my indoor cats' hunting instincts, like all people who have indoor cat companions know, they are given lots of toys to stalk and pounce upon.
My cats love troll dolls. Oh, you should see them go after them! They dig their claws in, toss them in the air and then bat them against the walls. When they rip them to the point that they don't make good toys anymore, they just bury them in the litter boxes. I never know when I'll come across a little troll head when using the vacuum cleaner!
You see, beepbeep: No innocent kritters mauled and dismembered, just troll dolls!

Ray P., the image of troll dolls buried in litter is hilarious!!
Do they really do that or is it all just a metaphor for what should happen to this forum's trolls?
Monkey would love a troll doll to mangle!!

The answer I suppose would be to keep your cats indoors, keeping both the cats safe and the wildlife safe.
Although I do have 5 outdoor cats and I do always feel terrible when they bring in a bird or mouse (never had a cat kill a rabbit).
BTW, a cat technically isn't a mass murderer, a mass murderer kills a lot of individuals all at once, whereas a serial killer is someone who kills a lot of individuals over an extended period of time, so cats would be serial killers... pedantic aren't I?

Im wondering why cats cannot simply wear a bell on their collars, or several bells perhaps ? Then they can go where they like and not harm wildlife ?
On a lighter note, I found it really funny that carrot successfully turns any topic into a debate on pet keeping - Hi carrot
Animal Rights is not against cats, we want EVERY animal to be safe that's all. I adore cats, but I also adore wildlife and would like to see both species well-cared for and contented

IMHO, I see no difference in letting cats eat wildlife and get nourishment from it, to letting cats eat commercial foods - EXCEPT that commercially canned/dried food is from animals which are horrifically farmed, and cruely slaughtered by human(un)kinds. A HUNGRY cat will kill instantly. Cats who 'play' with the prey do so for legitimate reasons - to teach themselves or their offspring how to kill. They know that some humans couldn't give a damn about dumping them when the novelty has worn off, so need to keep in practice.
I'm trying to persuade the rescued crew here to eat vegan dried food (highly nutritious, with added vegan Taurine etc.) but they're being stubborn I wish there was an easier way!
I found out so much about commercial catfoods from a brilliant book called 'Food Pets Die For - the shocking facts about petfood' by Ann N Martin - ISBN 0-939165-46-5 - that I decided I could never feed cats on canned commercial foods again. It truly opened my eyes to some shocking facts.

unfortunatly it doent matter how much you feed your cat or how many bells you put on their collar, they are highly developed predators. only keeping them in doors at night and most of the day with supervised outtings can you prevent your cat from hunting.

You could just not keep a cat if it's that big of an issue.
