October 20, 2006

A 45-year-old Glenwood man died after apparently falling from a tree stand while deer hunting on Thursday.

Michael E. Crain, 45, was reported missing at 9:57 p.m. Thursday and was discovered under his tree stand located near the Missouri River in Fremont County at approximately 10:30 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fremont County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The administrator and moderators wish to point out that we under no circumstances find the death of a human being a cause for celebration, despite the fact that the death of a hunter would spare the lives of hundreds of animals.

On the otherhand, we wish to make it clear that we consider the killing of animals through hunting as murder, and that hunters engaging themselves in hunting activities put themselves at risk with the possibility of even death. We would hope that, at least if not out of respect for animals, hunters would respect their own families by not engaging in such unnecessary dangerous activities.

We also regret any offence caused to relatives of dead hunters, but would like to advice them to search a less cruel hobby. Many ex hunters have found that they can live their passion also by become nature photographers and bird spotters. In many ways you can prove your skills the same with a camera as with a gun or bow. With the difference that no innocent creature has to suffer.

ARCO's views on hunting

Regarding our views on hunting, let us make it clear from the start. The number killed is irrelevant. What species are killed (whether endangered or not) is irrelevant. In which season animals are killed is irrelevant. Whether the animals are killed on legal or illegal grounds is irrelevant. Whether hunting is legal or illegal is irrelevant. Hunting is killing and unnecessary killing is always immoral and wrong.

All animals suffer individually. Animals are sentient, capable of feeling pleasure, pain, suffering, and are also capable of several emotions like friendship and family ties. All animals have the right to be free from unnecessary abuse, suffering or killing.

Several excuses are presented to justify hunting. One excuse is that hunting is a tradition. Well, traditions change with changing values. Slavery was once an accepted trade, but it was abolished because it was cruel, even though it generated jobs and riches to the white upper class. There is no reason why hunting should not be abolished as well, for exactly the same reason.

Another excuse is that hunting is practiced throughout the world. Just because something is practiced everywhere does not make it right.

Another hunting excuse is that it is a "hobby", and that it's none of anyone's business what hobby one takes up. Well, what if I had the hobby of doing damage to property? Would that be ok? Of course not. Damaging property is a destructive activity, and calling it a hobby does not change this a little. And what's more destructive than killing, irrespective of whether it's called a hobby or not? Someone might reply that "but damaging property is illegal...hunting is not". Well, if all it takes for hunting to stop is for it to become illegal, hunters should find no problem at all. The urge to hunt would stop the moment that hunting becomes illegal. An activity is made illegal because it is wrong, and not the other way round.

Another excuse, and the most feeble one, is that non-human animals were created by God for us to do as we please with them. We personally feel very uncomfortable about the thought of a just, kind and loving God who creates a creature capable of feeling and several emotions, and then allows another species to do with this creature whatever it likes. We would rather like to believe that if there is a God, this God is a God of love who cares for all creatures. Of course, other people might conveniently believe that God is a sadist who created sentient animals so that people may make them suffer and kill them.

And before someone says...but people kill other animals for food....well, first of all, one can always go vegetarian or vegan and kill no animal. And secondly, even if one does not go vegetarian, there is a difference between killing for food and killing just for the fun of it. Unnecessary killing is always unethical, immoral and wrong.

Switching to a vegan diet

We also would like to inform all readers on the healthy and less cruel switch to a vegetarian or vegan diet.

There's more to a vegetarian diet than saying goodbye to eating flesh products.
It's about a mindset, a heart for life, and a will to live naturally.
It's about understanding the important role that plant-based foods play in our lives whether or not we eat animal products.
It's about appreciating the superiority of certain ingredients, and their essential contribution to the quality and longevity of life.
It's about responsibility and accountability towards the complexity and beauty of the human body, and the respect that it deserves by treating it with the proven benefits of everything good and positive, that includes a vegetarian diet - whole foods in their most natural form.
It's a lifestyle that includes the best that life has to offer, and a recognition of the natural laws of health and the principle of cause and effect.
And just as important, it's about the ethical treatment of animals.

Most omnivores think becoming a vegetarian is impossible and can't even begin to imagine how they might be able to survive, let alone enjoy life without all of those flavors they have been used to.
But with a positive attitude, a desire to make a change in a healthy direction, and some creativity, one will discover a whole new world of possibilities and reap a multitude of physical, mental, and emotional benefits, not to mention financial savings.

So why not have an open mind and give it a try?
After all, what have you got to lose?
