We have now been online for five years!
In that time a lot has happened. This forum started out as an obscure one man's project and turned out to become a meeting place for activists, with a wonderful crew working behind the scene.
I am happy to see that activists have used this platform to communicate with other AR enthusiasts, and have even gotten together outside of the website's boundaries.
Without our mods, ARCO could never have stayed online. So I would like to thank past and current mods.
Animalrightsmalta, Kusinagi (Amber), Panthera, Pilgrim, Sage, Sharon, Terri and Tourterelle, thanks for everything!
And last but not least, thanks to all the members who have contributed to the boards.
Don't stay away! We love to hear your opinions and ideas. During the last forum update, some lacto-ovos felt like they had been left behind. But nothing could be farther from the truth!
Check the "Veggie to Vegan" board. Get support there and keep working toward a cruelty-free lifestyle!
And do you have other opinions about animal rights? Please share them with us!
That's what ARCO is about, challenging each other!
How important is it to avoid casein?
Do we have to look at everything with a magnifying glace?

hello everyone,
I was just wondering how important casein is to avoid in regards to reducing animal suffering. In other words, what if any impact does casein have on animals? I am talking about the amount that is in products like soy cheese and non dairy creamer.
I am wondering this because a while back I spoke to someone at PETA who told me that casein is not really a big deal. In fact, 2 people at PETA told me this on 2 different occasions. They said that it is just a byproduct of dairy and that they do not milk cows to get the casein so it is not something to be overly concerned with.
I just wanted to run that by people on here to get their feedback on that. I am just trying to figure out how important it is that I don't buy it. I know it is not healthy but I am just wondering about the animal aspect of it.

Stopping breeders
A recurring topic at ARCO. What about pets/animal companions?

We are privileged to share our home with 'companion animals'.
We do not OWN them - they have the Right to live as THEY wish to.
They are obviously happy living with us, and it's their choice.
I would not dare call them 'our pets'. To do so is derogatory.
This is MY own moral stance on this subject. Do you agree, or not?

A welfarist and an abolitionist...
Two complete opposite stories...
A must read if you are interested in the abolitionist approach to animal rights.

A welfarist and an abolitionist came upon an evil man beating a horse with a stick.
"That is a terrible thing" said the welfarist.
"That is indeed a terrible thing" said the abolitionist. "But how can it be prevented?"
Just then, a powerful genie appeared. "Because you are both compassionate people" said the genie "I will grant you each one wish."
The welfarist made his wish, and the stick vanished. The heart of the evil man was filled with remorse, and he rushed forward to comfort the poor animal. But his arms embraced only the empty air, for the abolitionist had made her wish and the horse had vanished.
|
Actually, it goes like this:
The welfarist made his wish, and the stick vanished. So the evil man went and got a whip instead. The welfarist asked for another wish, and the genie, moved by the plight of the horse, relented. The welfarist made his second wish, and the whip vanished. So the evil man went and got an electrical prod instead. The welfarist asked for another wish, and the genie, moved by the plight of the horse, relented again. The welfarist applied the same thinking as before, made his wish, and the prod vanished. So the evil man went and got a taser, saying that he had been planning to modernize anyway, and that a taser allowed him to electrocute the horse from a safer distance.
The abolitionist finally made her wish, and the horse, no longer bound to the cart, galloped away.

Animal disections in biology class
Clairévoyagerfan asked our views, opinions or a kind of vegan code on watching animal disection in biology class.

I don't see any issue with it. That's how we learned about ourselves back when the world was just breaking away from religious rule in the way of science. In current times all the animals dissected in school were farm raised and given decent care. I've see a few of these places and never saw any kind of torture or mistreatment. At least around the Georga schools. Watching, and even taking part in the dissections is a great hands on way to learn. In the long run everything will die. As long as its not a torturous death then I see no issue. Most animals that are used for dissection are given a does of gas that knocks them out painlessly and fries their brain. For your larger animals such as pigs and the like my experiance has always been that they die from a disease or had to be puts down for good reason, good reason being unable to walk painlessly, eat, or function normaly due to a disorder, accident, or fatal issue, that would have been a slow painful death. So from my point of view and knowing the background of the animal if there's nothing criminal, then hell, a great way to learn.

Are you vegansexual?
Is it impossible for a vegan to date a non-vegan, does it make everything more difficult or doesn't it matter?

I think the real question is how can you even like (in a romantic sense) someone who isn't a vegan.
I know atraction has a largely emotional component, but it has also a rational side. Mr. Francione mentioned an analogy to racists and other types of discrimination. Well, that's the point. Could you be interested romanticly in a homophobe or a racist? How do you end up with those feelings inside you?
|
This way of thinking strikes me as a bit arrogant. It sounds like you're saying that veganism trumps all other virtues and all other vices and sets all vegans apart as a separate class of humanity, morally superior to all non-vegans. And it doesn't work like that. There are vegans and non-vegans who are loyal friends. There are vegans and non-vegans who help the homeless. There are vegans and non-vegans who cheat on their taxes. There are vegans and non-vegans who cheat on their partners. There are vegans and non-vegans who go out of their way to rub their self-proclaimed moral superiority in the face of everyone they meet. And so forth.
If you want to make the racist/homophobe comparison, you have to be fair about it. If a person spent her whole life in a society where racism is the norm, where all the people who raised her and cared for her were racist, and where non-racist ideas are hardly mentioned, is it any wonder that she would have deeply ingrained racist tendencies? And if you knew about all this, don't you think you'd be able to manage not to hold it against her if she couldn't get over them right away?

Hi! I just joined this forum, and I am happy to have found this group. It looks promising. Anyways, I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian at the moment. I've been one for about three months. I would really like to move on in becoming a vegan. I don't want any part in supporting the meat industry. The problem is that I have no idea how to replace so many nutrients with entirely new foods. I am a teenager, so I still need to drink plenty of calcium. I would be willing to switch to soymilk, but I've heard it can be bad for you. It's just overwhelming giving up things I've taken for granted, but the animals are worth it. My biggest question is: what are your tips for knowing what foods contain dairy products and avoiding them? This information will help greatly!
