This book, by a trained ( but eclectic) Professor of Philosophy at Cal tate, Hayward, supports the more nuanced and complex ideas most of us non-philosophers have about animals and our relationship with them. Sapontzis gives hilosophical support for the belief most of us have that there really is an objective moral component to the actions of non-human animals that we see as moral -- the brave mother cat who runs into a burning building to rescue her kittens, or the loyal dog who pulls his companion human out of a river, or the altruistic gorilla who saves the little boy who falls into her zoo enclosure. He also gives sound philosophical support for our feelings about predation, the difference between just and unjust research on animals, and a solid examination of the supposed conflict between holistic ecological ethics and an individualistic animal rights ethic. Sapontzis really provides a PRACTICAL ethic of animal rights/liberation based on a solid theoretical basis.
